These siblings are all embodiments of different kinds of sandstone. They might be differentiated by colour or by roughness.


They are the grandchildren of Takotowai and Tuamatua through their parent, Rangahua, who paired with Tu Maunga. Another kōrero says they are the offspring of Rakahore and Ukurangi.

Hine-tūa-hōanga ki Whakatāne

Hine-tūa-hōanga along the Whakatāne river is an ancient grindstone used by tīpuna of Ngāti Awa to sharpen their tools.

This example of a grindstone shows how a whole toka was used and is a permanent part of our landscape.
