Nikau Hindin

Ngai Tūpoto, Te Rarawa, Ngāpuhi

Based in Tūranga-nui-a-Kiwa

An artist predominantly working with aute and natural pigments, Nikau’s practice has been exhibited widely throughout Aotearoa and internationally. Her first major solo show opened in June 2020, Kōkōrangi ki Kōkōwai, at the Dowse Art Museum in Lower Hutt. This body of work showcases more than 15 works created from aute painted with earth pigments. Rhetoric around her practice tends to focus on the re-learning of the materiality of aute; perhaps another element that holds just as much significance, is that Nikau’s mahi is currently some of the most widely exhibited examples of earth pigment exploration by a contemporary Māori artist at this time.
