Symphony Morunga

Ngāti-Kaharau, Ngāti-hau, Ngāti-whakaeke, Ngāti-Tautahi, Ngāpuhi-nui-tōnu

Based in Te Tai Tokerau

Symphony is currently in her first year of a degree in Maori Arts at North Tec in Whangarei.  Her design elements are based on Toi Maori and are often inspired by whakairo, ta moko and her exploration in graphic design. This has led her to explore her interests in history and natural materials within Aotearoa.

Symphony has recently been involved in the Tai o hī Tai o hā programme under the umbrella of Toi Nga Puhi, this programme gave rangatahi access to a wide range of toi practitioners.

She feels inspired by the wāhine Māori of the Ngāpuhi art world to embrace her own Māori identity through her toi. These experiences have encouraged Symphony to form a stronger connection to her whenua and Papatūānuku through the use of customary materials and the investigation of kōkōwai, waitae and mahi aute.
